Description
Substantial signed landscape by Anton Hans Karlinsky, the Austrian landscape and portrait painter born in Vienna in 1872 and active in Vienna and Rossatz, who studied at the Vienna Academy under Julius Victor Berger and Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels. Karlinsky is closely associated with Austrian landscape painting, and his auction history shows a steady market for signed oils, with stronger prices for attractive, fully resolved landscape compositions.

The present work shows a sunlit rocky escarpment descending toward a winding river valley, painted in warm earth tones with an atmospheric, slightly hazy distance. The handling is consistent with Karlinsky’s landscape manner around the turn of the century, and the painting retains a good decorative scale at 39 x 31 in., housed in a substantial ornate gilt frame measuring 43 x 51 in. The frame adds meaningful presentation value, though it should be treated as a bonus rather than the primary driver of value.

Condition
Painting appears in good overall condition, signed lower right and dated 1901. The frame has losses to ornamental elements and localized wear. Those losses reduce the frame’s standalone value, but it still presents impressively on the wall and supports the lot well.
