Large polychrome needlework picture depicting an 18th-century-style pastoral scene, with finely worked figures in colorful robes gathered beneath a spreading tree beside a stream, a central woman holding an infant and attended by companions, amid lush foliage and distant landscape. Worked in wool and silk yarns on a finely woven canvas ground, showing a high level of detail to the drapery and faces. Presented in an impressive deep, carved walnut (or similar hardwood) frame with scrolling rococo motifs and corner cartouches, fitted with an inner gilt-composition liner and glazed for protection. Likely British or Continental, late 19th century, in the Victorian taste and probably after an earlier engravings or print source.
