Oil on canvas river landscape, probably Scottish School, late 19th century. The composition shows a rocky stream running through a wooded valley, with boulders and small falls in the foreground, a stand of trees at right, and rolling hills receding to distant blue mountains under a soft, clouded sky. Rich greens and earth tones are balanced by the cool blues of the water and distance. Presented in a substantial later gilt frame with molded bead-and-reel and stepped inner molding. The reverse of the canvas bears the supplier’s oval stamp for “Alexᵣ Hill, Colorman to the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh”, indicating Scottish manufacture of the artist’s materials; the frame carries an old framer’s label and a handwritten slip identifying the work, though the artist’s name is not fully legible in the present photos. Unsigned on the visible face.
